I half agree with this, mostly the connection part, but I don’t think that is exclusive to appearing on camera.
Ultimately the term “YouTuber” or “the YouTubers” has started making me uncomfortable because recently it always seems to be used more in reference to a select five or six really prominent people (depending on the person using it’s tastes), despite the fact there are millions of people who have claim to the term!
Soooo many people at SitC went exclusively to “meet the YouTubers” and were surrounded by thousands of people who fit that description, but weren’t the ones they meant. It just seems like such a waste to limit yourself and miss so many connections.
You’re a YouTuber. You use the site, interact with users, creators and followers alike; you have as much right to the title as the person on the screen. Don’t use it as a term to fuel the us/them dichotomy between creator and viewer <3
