5,000 people showed up for an event orchestrated by the Janoskians (YouTube group from Australia who I literally just heard of 20mins ago yet they can still command that much attention. The internet is vast and scary)
People got trampled, police got called, parents were weirdly apathetic about the whole thing, and the video footage shows that all that some of the teenage fans cared about was that they got to touch the getaway car the Janoskians were rapidly bundled into
While there’s volumes of cautionary tales about the organisation of future YouTube events that can be written from this, I just want to say I am so, so glad that most of you guys are intelligent, independently-minded, sane people that don’t define yourselves purely on things you like - specifically me, and the stuff I make. I know most of that is down to me not having nearly the kind of subscriber numbers or regular content output that these guys or others like them do, but honestly sometimes I think about what things could be like if you guys acted more like a fandom, and honestly, I don’t think I could hack it
The concept of fandom in general unsettles me though; don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge believer in being completely unironically enthusiastic about stuff, and sharing that love! But not to the point where you become part of a homogenous indiscernible mass of shipping and unnecessary references and poorly constructed tributary usernames. Overall I guess I’m just glad most of you represent that belief, in a way.
I dunno where I’m going with this, just wanna let you know that I appreciate you guys. Sorry that it took someone else’s fans being horrendously awful to get me to say it though <3
